Christmas Calligraphy Gift Guide 2020

I’ve submitted my Christmas wish list to Santa (or in my case, the husband) and as you can imagine, there are a few calligraphy-related requests in there.

While 2002 has been a strange year, to say the least, calligraphy businesses and suppliers have been pulling out all the stops to launch new products or tweak existing ones.

Quite a few have caught my eye on social media, so I thought I’d put together a little gift guide, so you can drop hints – or find inspiration for a calligraphy lover!

Gifts to help you learn calligraphy

The Calligraphy Box by Jenni Liandu Calligraphy

I follow Jenni on Instagram and feel tired on her behalf when I see her neatly stacked subscription boxes ready to go out each month!

The Calligraphy Box was launched earlier this year and you can sign up for three, six or twelve months at a time. You can pick up past boxes via her online shop.

If you’re a beginner, you can start with a specially curated beginners box, before moving on to the themed boxes, which cover everything from flourishing to envelope calligraphy to ironing out issues like consistency and spacing.

Letterbox Calligraphy Gift Set by By Moon and Tide

There are lots of Modern Calligraphy kits out there at the moment, but I’ve chosen these from Claire Gould at By Moon and Tide.

Claire was one of the first calligraphers I came across when I started out and she remains an inspiration to this day. She even sent me a particularly well-timed message of support via Instagram on World Calligraphy Day back in August, which I’ve still got saved on my phone!

She’s recently revamped and re-packaged her kits and as well as the Letterbox Calligraphy Gift Set, there’s a Christmas edition and The Ultimate Modern Calligraphy Set.

Yalloplate – Rachel Yallop x European Pointed Pen Collective

Having taken part in The Poetic Pen with Heather Held via The European Pointed Pen Collective, this 12-week course with Rachel Yallop is seriously tempting me!

Rachel Yallop

The course has been designed for EPPC, with six online lessons of two-hours each and a dedicated Facebook group where you can share your work with Rachel and other learners.

Rachel is one of Britain’s foremost calligraphers and lettering designers and her unique talent blends the art of expressive calligraphy with graphic design.

Yalloplate is inspired by her variations of copperplate, breaking free from a formal, more restrictive style, to create something individual, fine and elegant, with a definite personality.

Meticulous Ink

I was lucky enough to visit the actual physical shop in Bath this summer, but I’ve loved watching owner Athena Cauley-Yu’s behind-the-scenes tales on her Instagram Stories.

Meticulous Ink

I’ve also loved that in spite of everything this year has thrown at us, she has still launched new products and I pretty much want every single one!

My top picks are: Personalised Pencils, Rainbow Notebook, Dark Calligraphy Practice Pad and Calligraphy Pick ‘n’ Mix.

The shop also celebrated its 10th birthday this year and some special edition celebratory gift boxes are still available.
