Calligraphy workshops in the North East

Weekly classes

Creative Calligraphy was established by Angela Reed in May 2014 and almost two years later, she was asked to teach her first calligraphy class.

She now runs weekly classes in Sunderland and South Tyneside.

Two of her weekly groups are affiliated to the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS), which is the UK’s leading organisation for calligraphy and lettering arts.

The weekly groups give aspiring calligraphers the time and space to develop their skills in a supportive, friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Each term focuses on a specific script, or skill, with guest tutors often invited along to teach complementary creative topics, such as bookbinding, print-making and watercolours.

The lessons are driven by the interests of the participants and are open to people of all abilities, from beginners to those with more experience.

We have a well-stocked calligraphy cupboard full of materials to experiment with and books covering a range of calligraphy, lettering and design topics.

Angela also teaches one-off workshops and has tutored throughout the north east of England on behalf of a range of organisations.

Upcoming courses and workshop dates are shown below.

Calligraphy Short Course: Carolingian

January 13 @ 1:00 pm - February 17 @ 3:00 pm
£60.00

Join me at The Art Room Sunderland for a six-week short course focusing on Carolingian – one of the finest medieval scripts.

It is named after Charlemagne, King of the Franks (764 AD – 814 AD), who was a great patron of literature and the arts, despite being illiterate himself.

His scribes developed the script in the late eight century for clarity, regularity and readability. It reached England around 950 AD.

It is largely based on the half-uncial, but with longer ascenders and descenders and a slight slope.

There are also shared elements with Foundational Hand and Italic scripts.

The course will run on Tuesdays, between 1pm and 3pm, on the following dates: January 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 10 and 17.

It is suitable for beginners and improvers and all materials will be provided.
