National Stationery Week

There seems to be a day or a week to celebrate anything and everything and when I worked in a newsroom, we got press releases about them all.

I literally cannot walk past a stationery shop without popping in for a browse and after years of filling spiral-bound reporters notebooks, I have a particular penchant for pretty jotters and journals. This also appeals to my love of writing lists!

My admiration is shared by thousands of people on social media.

Fellow South Shields lass and comedian, Sarah Millican, tweeted: “For some of us, EVERY week is National Stationery Week.”

As a calligrapher, I use stationery all the time, whether it’s plain white layout paper for practice sessions or beautifully designed and printed wedding stationery, and I’m learning more about it every day.

NSW, organised by the London Stationery Show, celebrates the written word and all things stationery and aims to get people writing, particularly children.

A new poll has found that Brits still treasure the age-old skill of handwriting, with 68 per cent agreeing that it remains a very important tool in this digital age, and a third of people saying they had written a thank-you letter or note in the previous month.

Chris Leonard-Morgan, organiser of NSW, said: “While modern technology has transformed the way we communicate, the skill of handwriting remains important in education, employment and everyday life. It isn’t a question of just using one or the other.

“The results of the YouGov poll show that handwriting remains as important as ever, with the overwhelming majority of people surveyed saying they believed it was an important tool and that it is vital children are taught handwriting at school.”
